At just 40kg, this factory-style T45 kit is built for one of Subaru’s most important early rally platforms. It sits within our Subaru roll cage range and carries dual certification, both Historic and FIA, making it a versatile option for classic and modern competition categories. For teams preparing a Subaru Legacy First Generation roll cage where eligibility, low weight, and period-correct appearance all matter, this design keeps the original factory cage geometry while adding modern structural development.
The cage adds A-bar support, hoop lateral bracing, and additional gussets over the original factory design, improving structural performance while preserving the visual character expected in a historic build. Those enhancements were developed through FEA testing to optimise strength and stiffness, giving competitors the reassurance of modern engineering behind a cage that still looks right for the car’s era.
The 40kg all-up weight is especially important on a platform where light running can be a championship requirement. We manufacture the cage from high-tensile T45 tube, using accurate profiling and bending processes to support fit and repeatability. The kit includes CNC laser-cut and end-formed tubes, laser-cut and folded footplates and gussets, with production supported by our laser cutting services and CNC tube bending capability.
Designed, manufactured, and certified in-house at our Daventry facility. Declaration forms and fitting guide are included, with installation photos available on request. Why Choose a Fully Certificated Roll Cage?
FIA Certificated roll cages offer a significant competitive edge over cages built to either MSUK or Minima FIA compliance standards. Engineered with high-performance materials and optimized geometry, they deliver maximum strength with minimal weight — often up to 20 kg lighter than minima-compliant designs, as they are often designed with smaller diameter and thinner gauge tube.
Key Features & Advantages
“A piece of motorsport history! Especially in historic racing.” This is the opening statement for your car build, and Custom Cages can help keep to this motto.
When it comes to historic racing, the design of safety equipment like roll cages is crucial for both safety and authenticity. FIA Appendix K sets strict guidelines that allow historic cars to maintain their original appearance and geometry, while ensuring that safety standards meet the necessary requirements.
The simplicity of historic cages compared to modern ones can be attributed to the fact that materials and engineering standards were different back in the day. The emphasis was more on protecting the driver from certain types of crashes rather than achieving the multipoint designs of today’s standards.
In historic motorsport, the goal is often to balance modern safety standards while still maintaining historical accuracy. Modern cages are more robust, but they don’t necessarily replicate the way cars were originally reinforced, which can affect the authenticity of the driving experience.
Weld-in cages are still acceptable under the current rules, which is a plus for many restorers and classic drivers, as they provide a strong, period-appropriate safety solution.
A roll cage design must comply with the MSA/FIA technical regulations published in the MS UK Blue book. It is the competitor’s responsibility to ensure his/her roll cage complies with the technical regulations appropriate to the event they are competing in.
