One of the First FIA Certificated Roll Cages for the INEOS Grenadier

Developed in partnership with leading INEOS aftermarket supplier Buzz Special Vehicles, this project set out with a clear objective: to design, develop, and install the first FIA-certificated roll cage for the ever-popular INEOS Grenadier.

With the intent to use the vehicle properly and not just for show the first shakedown was planned for the Goodwood and the Yorkshire Hill Rally ahead of overseas events.

Working closely with Alex and the team at Buzz, the Grenadier’s interior was quickly stripped in preparation for 3D scanning using our Creaform 3D scanner. Our design engineers visited Buzz’s HQ to capture a full scan of the vehicle, allowing the complete roll cage to be designed and developed before the Grenadier ever arrived at our workshop.

Before any components were manufactured, the full design was submitted for independent FEA analysis to ensure it was fit for purpose. Given the Grenadier’s weight, ensuring the structural integrity of the roll cage was absolutely paramount.

Once the FEA tests were signed off and approved, it was all systems go.

With the vehicle in-house, the roll cage kit was manufactured and prepared for its first installation. This required removal of the dashboard and Safari window surrounds to allow correct routing of the cage exactly as per the approved design.

To further enhance strength and safety, we developed additional chassis mounted doublers, allowing the roll cage mounts to interface directly with the chassis for increased structural integrity. The use of our FIA-homologated demountable LAP joints allowed the cage to be fully removable while maintaining seamless integration within the Grenadier.

Our LAP joints are not only FIA homologated but also discreet in design welded directly into the tubes, with only the bolt head visible. This eliminates the common issues of catching race suits or boots on saddle clamps or unsightly sleeves. All LAP joints are machined in-house at Custom Cages from solid bar and can be integrated into a wide range of roll cage designs.

Once fabrication was complete, the roll cage was sent for powder coating. Working closely with a local coating specialist in Daventry, a final colour was selected and applied, with the cage returned within just a few days ready for final installation.

Prior to refitting, the cage was fully disassembled and all LAP joint threads were carefully cleaned to remove any debris or excess powder coat. Following a set installation procedure, the roll cage was installed for the final time, and official images were captured for the FIA certificate.

Since completion, the Grenadier has been expertly piloted by experienced owner and driver Alex from Buzz, appearing on the INEOS stand, tackling the hill at Goodwood, and competing in numerous hill rallies. We’re looking forward to following the project into 2026, especially after the recent dyno session and tuning work carried out by the experts at Tom Wrigley Performance.
