When you’re prepping a new build, whether it’s a dedicated drift car, a weekend sprint racer, or a BMW track day monster, choosing your roll cage is the single most important safety decision you will make.
Once you start looking at specifications, you will inevitably hit the ultimate fabrication debate: T45 vs. CDS.
There is a lot of misinformation floating around car forums and social media about these materials. As the UK's premier in-house roll cage manufacturer for over 40 years, we are here to break down the honest truth about material properties, weight, and how they apply directly to our cage tiers.
The Core Material Breakdown
Before looking at the rulebooks, you need to understand why T45 warrants a pricier label than standard carbon steel.
CDS (Cold Drawn Seamless)
CDS is the undisputed workhorse of the motorsport world. It is a high-quality carbon steel providing incredible structural protection, excellent weldability, and fantastic predictability. It absorbs massive impacts by deflecting and bending rather than fracturing. It is the perfect, cost-effective entry point for grassroots builds where every penny of the budget counts.
T45 (Carbon Manganese Steel)
T45 is an aerospace-grade, high-tensile material. The secret lies in its significantly higher tensile and yield strength. It is drastically tougher than standard carbon steel, allowing it to withstand immense structural loads and severe, high-speed impacts without deforming.
The Weight Myth vs. Spec Reality
Let's bust the single biggest misconception out there: T45 does not automatically cut your cage weight in half.
If a roll cage specification dictates the exact same tube diameters and wall thicknesses for both materials, a T45 cage and a CDS cage will weigh virtually the same on the scales. The physical density of the steel is identical. The real weight advantage of T45 only comes into play depending on the specific regulatory tier of the cage design.
Here is exactly how our specifications break down so you can choose the right material:
1. 6-Point National (MSUK Compliant)
- The Spec: Designed strictly to comply with the blueprint regulations laid out by Motorsport UK. Note that MSUK structural requirements for these standard clubman layouts are classified as "Compliant" rather than individually certificated.
- The Material Choice: We offer our 6-Point National layouts exclusively in CDS. Because the tube wall dimensions are fixed by the MSUK rulebook for standard compliant designs, choosing T45 wouldn't save you any weight. A heavy-duty, cold-drawn seamless carbon steel setup gives you uncompromised, proven protection and complete regulation compliance at the most cost-effective price point on the market.
2. FIA Compliant
- The Spec: Built to meet the universal dimensions laid out in the FIA Appendix J regulations. This tier also covers specific Historic Appendix K requirements for vintage competition.
- The Material Choice: Just like the National specification, if the regulations mandate a fixed tube profile size, the physical weight remains similar between materials. Choose CDS for uncompromised, cost-effective safety; choose T45 for premium aerospace-grade toughness and ultimate chassis rigidity.
3. FIA Certificated
- The Spec: This is the highest level of cage design available. These cages are individually homologated and certificated directly under the FIA. Because an FIA certificate overrides standard minimum rulebook dimensions, it is fully recognised and accepted for all MSUK events as well.
- The Material Choice: This is where T45 shines for weight savings. On our modern, new FIA certificated designs, our engineering team can utilise T45’s superior strength to design the cage with thinner wall thicknesses while still exceeding the FIA's strict impact test thresholds. If you want the lightest possible cage without sacrificing an ounce of safety, an FIA Certificated T45 cage is the ultimate weapon.
4. Historic
- The Spec: Tailored specifically for historic racing regulations. Depending on the exact vehicle and period-correct class requirements, these designs can be either Compliant or Certificated.
- The Material Choice: If your historic build needs to meet strict minimum weight limits for its class, a heavy-duty CDS setup keeps you legal and safe. If you need maximum cabin safety and shell stiffness within a highly regulated historic layout, T45 is the premium choice.
Made in the UK, Raced Around the World
Regardless of whether you choose a cost-effective CDS National kit or an elite FIA Certificated T45 setup, your cage receives the exact same manufacturing precision.
